Yalikavak Windmills On the Hill
About 5km south of Yalikavak as you head towards Bodrum, you can pull off the road just after the hair-pin bend to be awarded a glorious view of the Yalikavak Bay. Further along the road, and just after the right hand bend, you’ll come to a set of three windmills.
There’s room to park by the derelict windmill on the left, and you can play chicken with the traffic, to look at the other two windmills on the right. One is derelict, but the other has been beautifully restored, with fully working sails, and the white-washed surface has been taken back to it’s original stone.
From this point you can marvel at the westerly coastal views in the distance, or climb up to the windmill with the sails and catch a glimpse of the Yalikavak vista to the North.
During our first trip to the Bodrum area, we hired a scooter/moped in Bodrum, and drove to Gümüşlük via Yalikavak.
We got an early start on a glorious day, and arrived at the windmills shortly before 10am – just in time to see the caretaker going through the laborious process of unfurling the sails.
He had to fight against the wind to unfurl each sail, and then strain to rotate the set of sails to unfurl the next one, but it only took him about 15 minutes to unfurl all of them.
This event made it onto My Top 5 picks for the Bodrum Peninsula for the Bodrum Peninsula.
Photo Gallery of the Windmills
The interior of the derelict windmills also delivered some great photo opportunities, and I’m on a mission to hunt down the remaining windmills on the Bodrum Peninsula to add to my “Windmill Gallery”.
