Hike to Manara Windmills
These three windmills overlook the town to Turgutries, located just past the village of Karabağ, which was the birthplace of the great Ottoman Admiral Turgut Reis. This village was built around the 15th Century, and is on a hill overlooking the town, full of tangerine groves, Bougainvillea and steep roads.
The hike to Manara Windmills takes you to an elevation of about ~260 metres, and this vantage point is accessible by car or on foot.
Directions to Manara Windmills
- Starting from the centre of town, travel east along Mehmet Hilmi Caddesi, away from the water
- Take a right onto Amiral Turgut Reis Caddesi.
- After about 200 metres, you’ll cross over Turgut Ozal Caddesi (right near the Opet petrol station), continue along Amiral Turgut Resi Caddesi all the way up the hill
- After about 1km, the Hawthorn Karaca Resort which will be on your left. Follow the fork to the rights (this is still Amiral Turgut Reis Caddesi)
- Keep climbing up the brick paved road for about 100 metres, and the road turns into 2085 Sokak.
- Follow 2085 Sokak for 200 metres, and then take a right onto 2076 Sokak
- Follow 2076 Sokak for about 300 metres, until you reach the edge of the village, and then continue along for about 150 metres until the road forks
- The RIGHT HAND FORK takes you to Bayrak Tepesi (Flag Pole Hill)
- The LEFT HAND FORK takes you to the Windmills
- It’s a 600 metre zig-zag path leading from the fork in the road to the site of the windmills.
- The road to the windmills turns into a gravel one (It’s passable in dry weather, but not to be attempted by car after heavy rain)
- You will see the windmills clearly and you can park on the road below them
