I’ve been working on a collection of Water-Themed articles recently, so the arrival of today’s unsolicited post from Polly at EasyJet was perfectly timed.
I know you’re going to enjoy her Waxing Lyrical about the “Top 5 Ways to Enjoy the Water in Bodrum”. The one activity you know you’re going to do at least once during your visit to the Peninsula, is a trip to the beach, but Bodrum has so much more to offer — both above and below the waves.
Polly’s Intro to her Top 5:
I work for easyJet Holidays and we feature Bodrum as part of our site, so it’s great when we come across other people who love the area as much as we do.
I’ve written a brief Top 5 Ways to Enjoy the Water in Bodrum (it’s a little longer than the normal “Top 5 in less than 50” feature length, but it covers a lot of great activities).
Bodrum is a haven for holidaymakers who love the water, with inviting sea temperatures of 16-25⁰C all year round. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or you just want to find a quiet cove to spend the day in, you’ll love what the Bodrum Peninsula has to offer.
Marine Life
So, what makes the waters around Bodrum so exciting? Well, the seabed is full of marine life. If you’re diving then you’ll certainly notice the coral beds and sponges as soon as you look down. However, coral is endangered so don’t try and grab some for your souvenirs! Creatures you might meet include barracudas, tuna and maybe even an octopus.
Shipwrecks
One thing you’re sure to find in the Aegean Sea at Bodrum is the remains of a shipwreck – there are lots of them scattered around the coast, which is what brings some of the more experienced divers here every year.
Typically they’ll be able to check out hot springs and caverns, and on most dives there’ll be plenty of amphorae (ceramic jugs) from the wrecks.
Here’s my Top 5 Ways to Enjoy the Water in Bodrum Turkey:
Diving
Diving is massive in Bodrum, thanks to the clear sea, and there’s a lot to explore around the volcanic Black Island. and Bodrum has 11 expert dive centres which are suitable for all abilities. If you’re just learning to dive, you’ll start out in a bay before being let loose in the open water.
List of Dive Centers in Bodrum
Day at the Beach
Hit one of the peninsula’s 33 Blue Flag beaches. There’s plenty of water sports, like water-skiing or windsurfing to try. Canoeing is also a favourite family activity in Bodrum, as it can be done in shallow waters.
You can head to Gumbet for banana boat rides, which are great for kids. The beachside resorts in this area are really focused on water sports, so it’s a great place to spend the day.
Aqua Park
Aqua parks are a great way to keep the kids entertained in Bodrum, with enough water-slides and wave pools to last a whole day. A visit to the Aqua Park in Bodrum is an ideal trip if you need to cool off.
Boat Trip
Hire a boat and a crew on the north coast and let them guide you around the many islands and beaches that are off the beaten track. If you really want to splash the cash, you can charter a yacht with a crew and stop off at some of the local harbours – Turgutreis is a good place to start your journey.
Underwater Archaeology
The Museum of Underwater Archaeology, inside Bodrum Castle, is a popular attraction for visitors who want to discover what lies under the sea.
Highlights include the Secret Museum in the Snake Tower, and the world’s oldest shipwreck called the Uluburun – try saying that after a few glasses of Raki!
