Today’s “Waxing Lyrical” Top 5 is a guest post from Paul over at Pure Tourism. He’s put together a summary of the Top 4 places to windsurf on the Bodrum Peninsula.
(In case you missed it, click here to read my recent interview with Paul, where he discusses Pure Tourisms’ ethos and services. Kadikalesi has such a lot to offer, for such a small location.)
Top 4 Windsurfing Locations:
Windsurfing in Kadikalesi
Kadikalesi is great spot for windsurfing and it’s just a 15 minute walk to Turgutreis. The wind is cross-shore, and because there are only a few other water users, this area is extremely safe and optimal for windsurfing. Mornings are perfect for beginners and afternoons for advanced.
The best wind for advanced sailors is in late July and the whole of August and there is nice waves for you to jump off.
Windsurfing at Fener Beach, Turgutreis
Fener beach is the other side of Turgutreis, and reaps the benefits from the wind being squeezed between the Island of Kos and the shore line. The wind is cross on shore and is light just by the shoreline. However once you go 200 metres you hit the wind where there is nice swell. The area is best for advanced windsurfers and there is also a good kite-surfing school here.
Windsurfing at Bitez
Bitez is near to Bodrum town and has very flat water due to the off shore direction of the wind. Within the bay it tends to be quite gusty and busy with other water users. However the further you venture out of the bay the better the conditions.
Windsurfing at Ortakent
Ortakent is about 30 minutes from Bodrum centre and has good cross off shore wind conditions. Near to the shoreline the water state is flat with small chop further out. The area is also very busy with many different water users.

Hi – I will be staying at the Tamarisk Beach Hotel in Ortakent in August and really want to windsurf in the waves! Do you know if I can hire kit in the wave spot in Kadikalesi? Or should I bring my own perhaps?
Thanks
Emma

Thank you for taking some time to create “Top 4 places to Windsurf on the Bodrum Peninsula Turkey”.Thanks again, Janelle

We stopped at Bitez while sailing doen the Turkish coast in our sailing boat. There was plenty of wind for windsurfing and with the meltemi blowing regularly in the summer. Conditions should be perfect for getting on the water day after day.
