Bodrum Fishing Spots on the Peninsula
Although we were informed it was the wrong season for fishing, and every boat captain we spoke to, told us that we wouldn’t catch anything, Tony wasn’t undeterred, and made good use of his telescopic rod to catch some Aegean fish. He fished day and night, from land and sea – and only got one bulls-eye.
Here’s a list of the Top 5 places Tony headed to, in an attempt to land the “big one”.
Day trip on the “Siesta” from Bitez, fishing between the Aquarium and Bitez’s Rabbit Island. Despite the captains assurances that he wouldn’t catch anything – he caught a brown stripy fish (not sure what it was) as a small Ton (that’s Turkish for Tuna!)
Daily charter Fishing Boat from Torba Bay. The only official “fishing” trip we could find; arranged through the local travel agent. The closest we could get to a fishing expedition – but it fell short. Famous last words from the captain “you should have been here yesterday, we caught 15 octopus!”
Night fishing from a Kadikalesi Jetty. A valiant attempt, but not quite deep enough to deliver the goods. So we headed to Kadikalesi’s Korfez Restaurant and ordered Sea Bream and Salad, and an obligatory Efes to drown our disappointment.
Sunset fishing from the Jetty in front of the Club Hotel Zemda. Following a busy day of a session on the Sea Kayaks; a meander around Gumusluk Bay; and my stellar negotiation and artistic skills at the local Fish Market to secure some squid as bait; we were rewarded with a couple of tiddlers.
Daytime beach fishing from Ortakent Beach. Shoulder to Shoulder with the local fisherman, some who had their own rods, and another who used big reels of line, peppered with hooks. Tony, stood in the mid-day sun trying to lure the local catch onto his hook – to no avail.
Although Tony didn’t try fishing in Akyarlar, this young lady did and plotted up in the middle of the harbour to try her luck at landing the big one:
If you’re enjoying some R&R on the Bodrum Peninsula, and fancy a spot of fishing, you can go to any of the larger towns (Yalikavak, Bodrum and Turgutreis) to locate a fishing tackle shop.
Or head to the Bitez Flea Market on a Sunday, and see if you can scout out a second-hand rod and reel.
Yeah… you nailed it.
