Community Expansion
We’re nearing the 3rd anniversary of our house purchase in Turkey. We fell in love with its off-the-beaten track location, and the lack of road signs and amenities didn’t concern us. We had a couple of bakkals on the doorstep, and it was only a ~2km drive into Gümüşlük.
You can’t stop progress
Fast forward three years, and our street has a name as well as a glistening new street sign, as do all of the other streets in the neighbourhood. These signs have paved the way for the expansion of local businesses.
Now the local area near our house has a variety of amenities within walking distance. The two bakkals have been joined by 2 news restaurants (CinemArt and Ada) and the roadside Doga Cafe, and just the other side of the mosque is a new Migros store.
New Kid on the Block
Situated ~2km outside of Gümüşlük and ~7km from Yalikavak. This Migros store is easy to locate. Just head East out of Gümüşlük for about 2km, and as you drive along the main road, you’ll see the Koyunbaba Mosque in the distance. Head towards it, and the Migros store is just before it on your left hand side.
This has to be the most coveted retail location on the Peninsula. Pull into the car park, and you’re afforded the best view of any shopping experience. Below you is the Gumsan complex and bay, and in the distance, the Aegean spans before you.
Food shopping is not my favourite experience – I’d rather be at the beach than wheeling a trolley around the food aisles. But each time I get out of my car at this carpark – I can’t help but smile.
The Migros store is part of a larger complex, much of which is still being developed and populated. But on the rooftop, the “Mydos Cafe Bar” is open for business. (renamed to The Terrace — which is now also closed)
There’s also an ATM right outside the store. Any misgivings I had about the Migros store opening in the neighbourhood have been dispelled – the convenience and view make it a double-winner.

So am I right?
Is this the best view you’ll get while shopping – or do you know of a better one?
It’s definitely the best view I’ve ever seen from a supermarket. A good thing? Who knows.

Ah! Somebody’s watching their trackbacks very closely!! 🙂
The Migros store is unfortunate for the two small markets nearby, but hopefully people will still support them to ensure they stay open.
