Markets or Pazaar or Bakkal?

When is a Market not a Market?

In the US and Europe the shopping locations with stalls, selling Produce, Textiles and Garments etc. a’re called Markets, but in Turkey, it’s a little different:

  • “Markets” refers to the supermarkets or shops — Migros for example.
Myndos Cafe in Koyunbaba, Gumusluk, Turkey
  • The smaller markets (corner convenience shops) are known as “Bakkal”
Unlu Bakkal and Market Kadikalesi
  • “Pazar” (Pazari, Pazaar) refers to the local weekly markets where you can buy fresh produce and local crafts and textiles.

Throughout this website, I refer to the Pazars as Markets, because from my perspective they’re Farmers Markets.

But if you ask a local where the market is, they’ll direct you to the local supermarket – so you should ask for the Pazaar.
