One of my favourite morning spots in the Gümüşlük Municipal Cafe. Before the municipality of Gümüşlük merged under Bodrum, the cafe was called the Belediye Tea Garden.

But now it’s called the Gümüşlük Cafe, and the menu has been reprinted with Bodrum Belediye branding. The furniture has had a bit of an overhaul too … they’d replaced their own brown chairs and tables, and now the cafe is respondent with the traditional white tables with blue chairs.
I had coffee here three times last week. There’s always something new to grab your attention. Usually it’s out on the water, or some scuffling around by the harbour pier by fishermen, cats or dogs. But on our first trip there this week we encountered a couple of tired fisherman laboriously attaching strips of calamari to hooks, and arranging them around the edge of their wicker-baskets for the next day’s fishing expedition.
Used to be that the only coffee available was an instant cup of Nescafe. But even our sleep Gümüşlük has moved with the times, and now they have an espresso machine … and it kicks out a mean Americano.
Turkish Pronunciation for Ordering Coffee
- We take our Americano (sade – plain e.g. no milk)
- They also do a delicious Turkish Coffee (Türk Kahvesi – pronounced Turk Car-vey-SEE) which we take with medium sugar (Orta – pronounced Or-TA)
