The region of old windmills in the Aegean’s popular holiday resort of Bodrum will become an attractive area for tourists if the new project that was submitted to the Muğla Council of Monuments, is approved. The project envisages connecting eight windmills to each other and establishing social areas like restaurants and cafes for guests visiting Bodrum.
The windmills, located in the old neighborhood of Gümbet, are visited by thousands of local and foreign tourists every year. The windmills are a little bit of an eyesore because of lack of maintenance.
From this vantage point, you get a great view of Bodrum Castle and the bays of Bodrum and Gümbet.
Most tourists come here via bus, to revel in the view and take advantage of the photo opportunity.
The Turkish Travel Agencies Union (TÜRSDAB) Bodrum Executive Chair Sevinç Gökbel said the restoration of windmills was very significant for the region. She said, “Bodrum has expanded too much. It needs new social areas. The region of windmills can serve tourism. Also, these windmills give information about Bodrum’s traditional structure and socio-economic situation in the past. This is why the region should be preserved.”
