Guest Post based on the Melinda’s original article
The call to prayer woke me up. I flung open the shutters and stepped onto the small balcony to breathe in the morning air and let those floating voices envelope me.
Right after breakfast in the hotel breakfast room, we followed the waterfront; arrived at the Castle of St. Peter and climbed to the entrance of the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
Our guide was not just any old guide. This man had actually been a primary participant in the important underwater archaeological expedition that had explored the oldest shipwreck ever discovered: the Uluburun.
In 1982, a Turkish sponge diver found the 3,400 year old wreck. It took divers ten years to recover its treasures from the sea.
Now those bronze age artifacts are displayed at the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology. And today we would be seeing them.
Our guide led us from room to room, explaining the items and how they had been retrieved. In a small hall, we sat to watch a brief film showing the diving expedition exploring the wreck. Lo and behold, there was our guide in the film! It was then we realized this man’s importance in this amazing find.
Photo Gallery – Passion for Pots!
Hushed, we drifted through darkened rooms with lit displays of precious articles they had found beneath the sea: ancient glass, bronze, clay, iron items, jewelry.
Ancient pots such as these captivate my imagination
Forgive my indulgence with the pots, but notice this one even had leftover bits of grain inside!
