The Advantages of Self-Catering Accommodation on the Bodrum Peninsula
If you’re travelling to the Bodrum Peninsula you’ll have a vast choice of accommodation to choose from. While resorts offering all inclusive or half board options may suit some holidaymakers, staying in self-catering accommodation allows you to make the most of this fabulous coastline and all it has to offer.
Here’s why…
Staying in self-catering accommodation allows you to really try out the local cuisine. Whilst resorts like Yalikavak now offer world-class cuisine in restaurants such as Nobu they are also full of tiny restaurants, cafes and food stalls selling freshly made local dishes.
As a rule of thumb look out for where the locals are dining to find the most authentic cuisine. Those with a sweet tooth should head for one of the many bakeries selling baklava, Turkish delight and pastries.
The seafood is also incredibly fresh and tasty as you would expect. Try the Cardakli Restaurant in Yalikavak for fantastic mezzes and phenomenal seafood.
Turkish breakfasts are also a real treat and wherever you go along the Peninsula you will find locals dining on traditional breakfasts which usually include bread, olives, butter, jam, honey, cheeses, tomatoes, cucumber and eggs (usually an omelette or boiled eggs.)
The locals also like a good cup of tea in the morning to wash down their breakfast and Turkish tea is very tasty. Sitting in one of the restaurants along the coast enjoying a leisurely breakfast is infinitely more enjoyable than being ferried into a hotel dining room and presented with a buffet of cereals and toast.
If you don’t want to dine out all the time you can get anything you need to cook in your private villa or apartment. For fresh produce hit Yalikavak Market which takes place every Thursday on the main square.
The array of colourful fruit and veg, spices, nuts, honey and other delicious delights on offer is huge.
It is best to get to the market as early as possible before tourists swarm the place looking for cheap clothing, handbags and other items. You will see the locals heading to market with their trolleys ready to be filled from around 7am and escaping before the midday heat gets too much.
If you are travelling with children and you are worried about being able to pick up essentials such as nappies or baby milk be reassured that these are readily available in supermarkets.
If you haven’t been to Turkey before you may see the security of staying on a resort or in a hotel as appealing but once you get to the Bodrum Peninsula you will realise that mingling with the friendly locals is all part of the experience.
Having the freedom to dine when and where you want adds to the feeling a being relaxed while you are away from the routine of home. So, when planning your trip to the Bodrum Peninsula make sure you go self-catering!
