You’ll see Efes advertising everywhere on the Bodrum Peninsula, so why not brush-up on this best selling Turkish beer before you head to the bar.
Five things to know about Efes Pilsen:
- It’s named after the ancient Greek city of Ephesus (Turkish, “Efes”), which is located near to the İzmir brewery
- It’s the best-selling Turkish beer with 80% of the market
- Rice is added during the brewing process, to give Efes its unique taste
- Efes Pilsen (5% ABV) is described as having “a bitter-sweet finish that becomes dry and hoppy”
- All Efes products sold in Turkey use High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Alternatives to Efes Pilsen:
- Efes Dark (double-roasted malt lager with 6.5% alcohol and hints of caramel)
- Efes Light (a 122.7-calorie and 3.0% ABV take on the original)
- Efes Xtra(a hoppier, 8.0% ABV lager),
- Efes Ice (a softer, more aromatic, ice-brewed version with 4.2% alcohol), and
- Efes Dark Brown (a 6.1% ABV double-roasted malt lager with a distinct coffee and chocolate bouquet).
Non-Alcoholic option
The Efes company produces a line of fruit-flavoured, non-alcholic malt drinks, branded as Ritmix.
My Efes of choice?
I’m not a big beer drinker… give me a cider or a Istanblue and OJ any day. But there’s something about sitting on the sand, at the edge of the Aegean as the sun dips effortlessly below the horizon… that’s screams:
“you should be drinking an ice cold Efes!”
– so at times like that, I succumb, by downing a chilled bottle of Efes Pilsen.
To round out this post about Beer, I thought I’d interject a touch of culture by showcasing a bit of creative artwork out of an Efes Pilsen can.
